Phase VI, Data Report: site, subsurface, laboratory and analysis results

What is performed

The Data Report brings everything gathered and computed in the first five phases into one organized document: the project description, site and geologic setting, exploration methods, subsurface and groundwater conditions, laboratory results, design parameters and the results of the completed analyses. It stops short of recommendations and conclusions. Those follow in Phase VII, the Geotechnical Report, written by the engineer of record from this report.

How it is performed

  1. Project information. Project description, scope, structures, loads and design criteria, carried from the project record (Phase I).
  2. Site and geology. Site description, geologic setting, mapped soils, flood zones and estimated bedrock depth, with the reconnaissance findings and photo log (Phase II).
  3. Subsurface exploration. Drilling and sampling methods, equipment and hammer energy ratio, the boring location plan, boring logs and groundwater observations (Phase III).
  4. Laboratory testing. The testing program, a summary table of results, the laboratory data sheets and any changes to classification per ASTM D2487 (Phase IV).
  5. Design parameters and analysis results. The parameter table for each stratum with every value labelled Tested, Assumed or Selected, and a summary of the analyses run and their results, with the calculations in an appendix (Phase V).
  6. Check the data. Confirm that boring logs, laboratory results and the parameter table agree, then complete a technical review of the report.
  7. Hand off and archive. Pass the checked data report to the engineer of record for the Phase VII Geotechnical Report, and save it with the project in the shared project library.

Why it matters in the workflow

The Data Report keeps facts separate from judgment. Everything in it can be traced to a boring, a test or a calculation, so reviewers, designers and contractors can rely on it as the factual basis of the project. The recommendations and conclusions of the Phase VII Geotechnical Report, written from a checked data report, rest on solid ground, and the report remains useful for future work at the same site long after the project closes.

What comes in and what goes on
