Ground Hazard Risk Management

MINA Hazard Monitoring

Where the track is vulnerable to ground hazards, and what the weather and rivers are doing to those places right now, on one map. What MINA does. Set up the map in the Map setup panel: choose Railroad or State DOT, pick the railroad or state, choose a base map and a quick view, add assets, hazards and monitoring, then Launch.

Data sources

Centerlines: Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) public rail network data, compiled for MINA (NCRR shown as the NS-operated H Line, A&EC District and the Charlotte–Greensboro main line). Mileposts: FRA public milepost data for all railroads shown (NS, CSX, CN, G&W, BNSF, UPRR, CPKC and NCRR), including FRA NTAD Rail Mileposts. Loaded live: FRA/BTS NTAD Railroad Bridges and Grade Crossing Inventory (with published mileposts); USGS NHD and Water Services; NOAA NWS river gauges (NWPS), alerts and NHC; Iowa Environmental Mesonet radar and MRMS; USDA NRCS SSURGO; FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL); USGS The National Map; Esri. Subsurface: Macrostrat geologic map (compiled USGS and state geologic maps, CC-BY 4.0); USGS 3DEP ground elevations (Elevation Point Query Service); USGS NWIS groundwater wells (national); state well-log and bedrock-depth databases for Ohio (ODNR), Indiana (IDNR), Illinois (ISGS), Minnesota (CWI), Missouri (DNR), Pennsylvania (PaGWIS), Virginia (DGMR), Kentucky (KGS) and Wisconsin (WGNHS); bedrock maps: ODNR drift-thickness raster, ISGS drift-thickness map, Missouri DNR depth-to-bedrock contours; USDA SSURGO for bedrock within the soil profile. Bedrock depth is interpolated from these (map trend adjusted by nearby well logs). State DOT networks: FHWA National Highway System and National Bridge Inventory (USDOT BTS NTAD), with FRA grade crossings by state. Not for operational dispatch decisions.

Step 1 (Map setup): choose Railroad or State DOT, then pick the railroad or state. Its network loads first; then work through the steps to Launch.
